Matariki is the name for the cluster of stars also known as the Pleiades. It rises in mid-winter – late May or early June. For many Māori, it heralds the start of a new year.
We have been reading about Matariki in class and we learnt that we can celebrate Matariki by:
- spending time with our friends and whānau
- enjoying music (singing, dancing, playing instruments)
- making and sharing kai
- telling and listening to stories
- creating art to share
- seeing the Matariki stars at night!
